A Fresh Perspective
Flying in a balloon is very different from, say, flying in an airplane. The
forward motion can be as slow as a walking pace. It is even possible to hold
a conversation with people on the ground! The view of the countryside and
sky is much more immediate than it would be in any other aircraft. And, of
course, there is a 360 degree view!
Since the balloon travels with the wind, the relative air movement on board
is zero. No one gets travel sick on a balloon flight. The take-off is barely
noticeable -- the ground appears to be leaving the balloon! This lack of
apparent motion frees the passengers to enjoy the serenity of the
countryside -- and to take clear photographs.
No one knows beforehand where the balloon will land. The wind direction
determines the course. At the end of the flight, the pilot selects a field
free of crops and animals and sets the balloon down. Says David Allen, pilot
of Magical Mystery Flights, "Every flight is a brand new adventure,
even for a veteran balloonist like myself!" We encourage our passengers to get involved
in every stage of the preparation and flight. After one flight with us, our
passengers know basically all there is to know about the hot air ballooning.
David Allen is a fifth generation balloonist and a F.A.A. Certified
Commercial Pilot. He holds the 1986 Tri-State and the 1989 PA State
Championships for accuracy. He also holds the 1997 and 1999 National Long
Jump Distance Championships. David knows ballooning, inside and out, and he
gives his undivided attention to our passengers' safety. At the end of every trip, we treat our passengers to champagne toast. Champagne has long been a tradition in ballooning. It originates in 18th century France when crews carried bottles to pacify farmers who thought their farms were being attacked by demons from the sky!
